Sea of Sunflowers

Clarion News reader Kathleen Fye of Knox called to report this “sea of sunflowers” along Old Knox Road near her home in Ashland Township. The field contains several acres of the blooming flowers. The future of the crop is unknown. Sunflowers are thought to have been domesticated 3,000 and 5,000 years ago by Native Americans who would use them primarily as a source for edible seeds. Each common sunflower can contain between 1,000 and 2,000 seeds.
