PAINT TWP. - The University Korner convenience store chain, with nine stores in Western Pennsylvania, including five in Clarion County, is planning a new store along River Hill (U.S. Route 322) in Paint Township.
According to information discussed at the Nov. 17 Paint Township Board of Supervisors meeting, the proposed new store will constructed on the site of the former Wolf's Auto lot.
According to information provided to the township in the form of a traffic impact study, the new store will include a 9,000 square-feet convenience store and 15 fueling pumps.
The traffic study noted the proposed store will have a "large" footprint, with most convenience stores in the area are about 5,000 to 6,000 square-feet in size.
The study acknowledges there is a "sizable" convenience store less than one-half mile away (Country Fair).
In summary, the traffic study engineers said the proposed store will not impact traffic operations in the area. The traffic study was provided to Paint Township as a courtesy. The review by the board made it a public document.
The plans indicated the store could be completed in 2022. No start of construction dates were provided.
A spokesperson at University Korner's main office said the company did not have any comment on new projects at this time. An email seeking comment went unanswered.
Paint Township Secretary Jacque Blose said there have been no building permit applications submitted for the project.
University Korner has two stores in Knox and one each in Clarion, Rimersburg and Sligo. The chain also owns two stores in Butler and one each in Kane and Marienville.
University Korner is an active supporter of various community projects and organizations. One cent per gallon of fuel sales at the Clarion and one Knox store go to the Clarion County YMCA. In Sligo, that fund goes to the Sligo Volunteer Fire Department and in Rimersburg it goes to the Rimersburg fire department.
