Real ID process drives marriage license requests

CLARION Clarion County Register and Recorder Greg Mortimer has noted a large increase in requests for certified copies of marriage licenses in order to obtain a Real I.D. from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

In addition, marriage license certifications are also being requested to comply with requirements to apply for social security or to place a spouse on an employer's health insurance plan.

Recorder Mortimer explains the procedures to request a certified copy of a marriage license as follows:

4The couple must request the certified copy of their marriage license from the county in which they applied for their license, not necessarily from the county in which they were married.

For instance, a couple who were married in New Bethlehem but applied for a marriage license in Kittanning would need to contact the Armstrong County Register and Recorder's Office for a certified copy of their marriage license.

Likewise, a couple who were married in Knox but applied for their license in Franklin would need to contact the Venango County Register and Recorder's Office to obtain a certified copy of their marriage license.

4The office will need to know the names of the couple at the time of application (which would include the female's maiden name.)

4The fee for obtaining a certified copy of a marriage license is $5.50. Payment can be made by cash, check payable to the Clarion County Register and Recorder's Office, or debit/credit card. There is an additional $3 transaction fee if paid by a debit/credit card.

4An individual can visit the office to obtain a certified copy of their marriage license which only takes several minutes for the office to complete. An individual can also call the office at (814) 226-4000, ext. 3501 to request it in advance and the staff will have it ready for the individual to pick up when they arrive at the office.

4An individual can write and request it through the U.S. mail by including the $5.50 fee, names of the applicants at the time of application and a self-addressed stamped envelope for the office to return it to them.

The office address is Clarion County Register and Recorder's Office at 421 Main Street, Suite 24, Courthouse, Clarion, Pa. 16214.

The office returns a mail request for a certified copy of a marriage license the day it's received or the very next working day at the latest.

4An individual can request a certified copy over the phone at (814) 226-4000, ext. 3501, if paid by a debit/credit card. The certification will be returned to the requestor the day of the request or the very next working day at the latest.

The office can also provide an uncertified copy of marriage license without the court certification and raised seal for a 50 cent fee although most individuals require a certified copy for official use.
