Polatty edges Etzel in Elk
ELK TWP. Republican Dave Polatty edged Democrat Keith Etzel 252-188 for a six-year term as Elk Township supervisor in the Nov. 5 general election.
Polatty won the Republican nomination over Etzel in the spring primary but Etzel won the Democrat nomination through a write-in campaign.
Etzel is a former township supervisor and Polatty is a road crew worker.
Elk Township still has a vacancy on its board of supervisors as supervisor Greg Clark resigned for that position effective Oct. 18.
It was too late for the Republican and Democratic parties to name a candidate to the fall ballot.
Supervisors Ray Rennard and Brain Miler have 30 from the time they formally accept Clark's resignation to appoint a replacement.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the board of supervisors is Nov. 11. If Rennard and Miller appoint someone to fill the seat vacated by Clark, that person will only serve until the end of 2019.
Rennard and Polatty will then have to appoint a third supervisor at the board's Jan. 6 meeting. That person will serve two years.
