Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton

Greetings Word of the Week fans and welcome to the Aug. 19 edition of Clarion County's favorite word game.

It was on this date in 1946 that the 42nd president of the United States, Bill Clinton, was born.

Clinton, a Democrat from Arkansas, was the second-youngest president ever elected, when he defeated President George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot in 1992. He was 46 years old at the time of his inauguration.

In 1996, President Clinton became the first Democrat to be elected to a second term since Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1936.

Clinton excelled as a saxophone player in high school, even earning first chair in a state band of students. But the future president made a career change after meeting Kennedy -- and deciding he couldn't be as good as John Coltrane.

Clinton talked to talk and gave several long-winded speeches over the years.

But we can't find any reference to him using the word xiphoid.

It's an adjective. Does xiphoid mean:

A: Having nine sides. "My stance on that is kind of xiphoid," said Bill. "Kind of darned if I do, darned if I don't, darned day and night. Darn."

B: Sword-shaped. "What's that xiphoid thing you have behind your back, Hill?" asked Bill. "What's that look in your eye?"

C: Chinese in origin. "If I was still president, I's say that COVID thing is xiphoid," said Bill. "But tell the missus I said so."

D: A sphere of multiple colors. "I tried that marijuana thing once and didn't like it," said Bill. "It made me see xiphoids in the back of my Ranchero."

Clinton was born three months after his father, William Blythe, died in a car accident. In his teens, Clinton adopted his stepfather Roger Clinton's last name

Hours before leaving office, Clinton pardons 141 people, including Whitewater figure Susan McDougal and publishing heiress Patty Hearst.

The most controversial pardon is that of financier Marc Rich, who had been a fugitive in Switzerland.

The president also pardoned his brother, Roger Clinton, who had been convicted on a cocaine charge in the 1980s.

The correct answer to the Word of the Week challenge is "B."
