Golden Eagles shine at Wuske Invite

ALLIANCE, Ohio The Clarion track & field team saw one athlete claim a first-place finish while another broke a meet record, as the Golden Eagles competed at the Jim Wuske Invitational hosted by Mount Union.

The Distance Medley Relay team defeated the field and set a meet record in the process, with the team of Haley Schaller, Kia Braithwaite, Skyllar Spears and Abigail Sullivan crossing the line a full 15 seconds ahead of the second-place competitors. They cruised to a time of 13:24.62, shattering the previous meet record set in 2015. It was also the best DMR time for the Golden Eagles this season, beating the previous best by 26 seconds.

Also winning on Saturday was Hope McQueeney, who blew away the field in the Triple Jump with a mark of 10.62m. McQueeney actually led the field from her second jump, a 10.46m performance, but cleared that mark herself with her fifth attempt. McQueeney also placed fifth in the Long Jump with a 5.18m mark.

Shelly Jones and Emma Pesicka had the other top performances in the field, placing third and fifth respectively in the Shot Put. Jones tossed the implement 12.36m, while Pesicka launched it 11.87m on her fifth attempt. Elsewhere, Mattisen Drake posted a ninth-place finish in the Pole Vault, clearing the bar at 2.93m, just below her season-high to date.

Haley Schaller also set a PR in the mid-distance events, breaking her previous best time in the indoor 800m. Schaller crossed the line in 2:35.08 to take 10th place in the field, and in doing so beat her previous PR by four seconds. In the sprints, Katylnn Traister earned a spot in the 60m finals with a time of 8.31, and followed that up with a ninth place finish with an 8.33.
